To put it bluntly, there would be no reason to buy an OEM equivalent if they weren’t cheaper! The manufacturers of the equivalents concentrate their efforts on providing a lamp that is as near to the quality of the original as possible at the lowest possible cost. So why buy the manufacturer’s lamp? When you purchase a genuine OEM lamp, you can think of the extra cost as an insurance policy. You know exactly what you’re getting, you’re assured to get support from the manufacturer in case there are any problems, and you can generally expect it to last longer.
When shopping for your lamp, you may notice some lamps being advertised as the “raw bulb” or “lamp only”. These are lamps that do not come with the metal or plastic housing for the bulb. Very few manufacturers offer their genuine OEM lamps without the housing and it’s for good reason. Detaching your spent bulb and re-inserting the new bulb is a very difficult procedure to do correctly. The chances of early failure and damage to the projector caused by lamp failure are greatly increased by not using a professionally mated bulb and housing in your projector. All OEM Equivalent lamps from Focused Technology come with the housing.
Re-Lamped Projector Lamps can be either a brand new bulb inside a used (recycled) lamp housing or a spent lamp that has been repaired to working condition. Re-using lamp housings or worse, refurbishing spent lamps, only increase the likelihood of getting a lamp that will fail earlier, cause damage from failure, or just plain not work out of the box. All OEM Equivalent lamps from Focused Technology come with brand new bulbs and housings.
If you see a price for a lamp that seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you see a lamp that is priced $100 or more under the cost of a genuine OEM lamp, you can be reasonably assured it’s either an OEM equivalent, Re-Lamped, or Bulb Only. Any trustworthy dealer should note what type of lamp they’re selling if it’s not OEM. Of course, this isn’t always the case, so don’t be afraid to call the dealer and ask.
